In a previous guest blog, I wrote about watching scary movies on Halloween. This time I’m back with some great movies that about witches and magic. Some are scary, some are funny, and all of them are entertaining. There are lots of movies about witches to choose from, but these five are a few of my favorites. They’re great for Halloween or any other time of the year, so get your coven together for a girls’ night in.
Oh, one more thing… You know that old stereotype about ugly witches with warts on their faces? That is soooo 18th century! The witches in these movies are beautiful, sexy, and very desirable women. After all, isn’t that a more realistic representation of modern witches?
Spellbinder
After witnessing an incident of physical abuse, Jeff Mills (Timothy Daly) steps in to rescue Miranda Reed (Kelly Preston) from her loser boyfriend. Jeff and Miranda soon fall in love. The beautiful Miranda has everyone under her spell except Jeff’s secretary, who suspects her of being something more than meets the eye. Later in the movie Miranda’s past returns to haunt her. She tells Jeff that a coven of witches, which she used to belong to, intends to kidnap her and use her for a human sacrifice. Will Jeff be able to save her again?
The Crucible
Starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder, this movie is based on Arthur Miller’s play about the Salem witch trials of 1692. A group of girls meet in the woods during the night to cast spells and dance. The girls aren’t witches, but when their ceremony is witnessed by an important member of the community they are accused of witchcraft. As the trial proceeds, the girls accuse others in the community of witchcraft in order to save themselves. Soon the whole town is caught up in a religious hysteria with tragic consequences.
Practical Magic
Practical Magic is an underrated movie starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sisters who have a reputation of being witches. They live under a family curse that destroys the men who love them. This is an excellent feel-good, cutesy love story of a movie filled with laughs. After watching it, you may even start your own tradition of “midnight margaritas”.
The Craft
If high school wasn’t scary enough, just add four outcast, angst-ridden teenage girls with supernatural powers. Their classmates nickname them “The Bitches of Eastwick” after discovering that the girls are trying to learn witchcraft. Their little coven began for self-protection and companionship, but things soon get out of hand. Thrilling and suspenseful, this movie is a real gem.
The Good Witch
The Good Witch is a romantic comedy starring Catherine Bell as Cassie, a beautiful woman who is new in town. After she moves into a spooky old mansion, she opens a curiosity shop called Bell, Book and Candle. The references to magic and witchcraft are very subdued. The film is really focused on positive messages, like being tolerant of others and having good self-esteem. This is an excellent family film that everyone can enjoy.

Also, just for fun: Hocus Pocus and Like Water for Chocolate. And Chocolat. Come to think of it, we need much more! (And if I could just make a case for Labryinth . . .)
Definately "Practical Magic" and "Chocolat". I enjoy watching "Hocus Pocus" as well. The others are ones I'll have to check out.
I love the witches from "Stardust", although they are the antagonists. ^^
I love "Practical Magic", "Chocolat", and "Hocus Pocus".
I think *many* people forget about "Simply Irresistible" with Sarah Michelle Gellar. It's full of kitchen witchery!!!
I also love "Practical Magic", "Chocolat" (Mmmmm Johnny Depp), "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark" and the "Harry Potter Series".
These are the movies I love to watch when I'm feeling in a "Witchy" movie mood
))
I love the Harry Potter films although I've never seen the first one (even though I own it on DVD). I haven't seen Chocolat although now I know Mr. Depp is in it I might just have to see it. And Practical Magic is a given!
