This amazing book by American ex-pat, Mary Sharratt, weaves a magical tale around the legend of the Pendle witches. Mary just so happens to be the guest blogger today so go and check out her post on All Hallows Eve in Old Lancashire and read an excerpt of her book.
“No one casts a spell like Mary Sharratt. I was enchanted by this wonderfully absorbing novel, fascinated by the very real yet magical world of the Pendle witches.
Bess Southerns, an impoverished widow living in Pendle Forest, is haunted by visions and gains a reputation as a cunning woman and healer. As she ages, she instructs her granddaughter, Alizon, in her craft, as well as her best friend, who ultimately turns to dark magic. When a peddler suffers a stroke after exchanging harsh words with Alizon, a local magistrate, eager to make his name as a witch finder, plays neighbours and family members against one another until suspicion and paranoia reach frenzied heights.
Other novels have been written about the Pendle Witches but none told so convincingly from the accused witch’s point of view. Sharratt interweaves well-researched historical details with a beautifully imagined story of strong women, family love, and betrayal.”

Certainly, Sally Owens from Practical Magic, because she takes the time to open her mind to the times around her. With a carefree sister, she has to hold together her image along with her sister's and their family tradition. You need to be a strong WITCH to do that!
I do not know too many witches, but I'd love to spend some time with Joan of Arc, and Sally Owens, and the Owens' Aunts. I hope that counts
