Countryside, Castles and Summer Wine

Yesterday was our last night in Yorkshire and it was hard leaving such a beautiful place.  Harder still when I’ve been fighting off the flu all week and had to make the 5 hour drive with achy bones.  Never mind, we’re home now.

I’m going to miss this view from the hotel window *sigh*

We finished our tour of castles on Thursday.  We went to Bolsover Castle which was built as a pleasure palace rather than a strategic defence building.  It’s quite a strange place with some of the castle in ruins and another part, the little castle, intact with some original features.

This is the little castle with a voluptuous statue of Venus:

Some rooms were quite bare, others had wood panelling and some had amazing murals:

This is the Elysium room, decorated with scenes of Greek gods and goddesses.  It’s a little room off the Lord’s bedroom where the ‘lucky ladies’ got to see the artwork ;-)

Our last castle was Conisbrough Castle near Doncaster.

And I have to say I hated this castle.  I didn’t mind walking about the grounds but the keep (which has floors re-installed) gave me the creeps.  Paul had climbed the stairs to the top by the time I’d reached the tower with Tabitha in tow.  I cursed him every step of the way for leaving me alone.  Tabitha and I just kept climbing and if it wasn’t for the fact I had her with me and Paul was waiting I would have bolted out of there.

Most castles have a ghost of two hanging around and it would appear Conisbrough is no exception.   A monk and a white lady ghost have been seen and many people report strange footsteps in the keep.

And yesterday we went to the village of Holmfirth.  This is where the BBC comedy ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ is filmed.

We couldn’t resist the bookshop which has a resident cat (he’s posing to the left):

I should avoid all bookshops.  Even quirky little second hand shops like this one because I can’t help but come out with a book or five.  Now I just have to find time to read them all!

That’s it for Yorkshire and our holiday.  I want to go back already!

Thanks for sharing the pics! It is beautiful countryside. :) Format and background has changed, hasn’t it? Very cool! Victorian looking, IMHO – and I love the Victorian look! :)

    Blessings,
    Bonnie

Wonderful pictures Lyn, what atmosphere they convey, although to have actually been there must have felt so much stronger. Still they are in your head and heart, and with some meditation you will be able to recapture them til the next time you can return and add to your memories. Thank you for sharing xxx
